Pilot and Tug Boats

At each harbor a local pilot came aboard to guide the ship safely to its berth, arriving by a small boat designated for that purpose. Upon departure from the harbor a pilot again came aboard and later departed on a pilot boat. Tug boats occasionally pushed on the side of the ship in order to fix its position or, conversely, "tugged" the ship away from its berth by means of a rope.
